Syphilis Sauna is the solo project of Patrick Urn . Using a blend of Hardware, Software, acoustic and homemade devices Syphilis Sauna creates walls of glitched out noise that evolve into haunting melodies and dark pseudo rhythms. Syphilis Sauna's main influences are literary, including P.K.D, Hp. Lovecraft and JG. Ballard. Syphilis Saunas other main focus is collaborating with other artist including film makers, writers, live actors and other musicians the purpose of which is to make the live experience a much more exciting one.
Released 2003 on Backwards NW (the first real Backwards NW album) This one perhaps could be defined as a very self exploratory album. The title come from a belief that almost everyone (myself included) has a definite persona that they push out for others to see , the problem is that often this becomes the only thing that remains after years of singular use and self deception... Press Reviews :
"Syphilis Sauna is the solo-project of musician/sound-collagist Patrick Urn, who also makes music as part of the dark electronic group In Ether. In relocating to Seattle, Urn's nourish blend of IDM, glitch-hop and industrial tinkering is a fitting gift to the city; a soundtrack to the spooky, cloud-covered atmosphere it takes on most of the year. Live through enough gray days, and a kind of unparalleled clarity bursts forth. I believe that Urn's ultimate aim in making music as Syphilis Sauna- and one Richard D. James could be proud of- is contemplation. While there are moments of frenetic energy on the mostly-live album, a majority of the songs are built on a foundation of jet-hum whirs, light and rapid drumtaps, and Coil-like synth tones. Blessed with listenability, something many IDM albums fall a tad (uh, miles) short of, the sounds on SS's newest collection of songs, Step Down In, are persistent and pleasant enough to worm into your thoughts like viruses. In this way, not just the most particular darkwave fans will hear this, and Urn's political and social messages - because they're in there somewhere-
Listening to this at midnight while looking out my second-floor window into a sketchy alley gave me the appropriate creeps. Both everyday scenes, like a lone woman in a miniskirt lighting a cigarette beneath the streetlight- and tiny details, like a faraway curtain's flutter, were given a suspicious foreboding of doom. "Sottjoyriytilmitid", recorded in a Denver café, shifts the album into the realm of twinkly soundscape, with deep bass acting as support and counterbalance to the otherwise pretty noises. I think of "28 Days Later", and imagine a light, fresh rain falling on the charred and wasted remains of London following the zombie-induced apocalypse. The sounds on Step Down In are a sonic study in duality. Urn's music creates visual reminders that no matter how fresh and good something like rain can be, without the dirt and shit of life to wash away, it's worth nothing.” -Rachel Shimp- www.tinymixtapes.com

This is the second lot of tunes, from this London-based group, that we have featured. Their mix of electronica and alt. indie rock is as experimental as ever, creating moods that reach all emotions. ABOUT THE MP3'S...
Tunes from EP 3>> **NEW DOWNLOADS**
These 2 brand new productions, both from the groups latest cd, are as dark and eerie as the last 2 IDIOVERSE EP's. "ISIS" is a twisted tale, told with warped effected vocals, and a melody that could send shivers down your spine. Then you have the big guitars and breaky beats holding it together. This is a golden moment from the group. "MAMMOTH" is another gem. It is even more laid back than the last tune, and weaves its magic in a similar hypnotic way. The depths these guys can get to is crucial to their style, and these two tracks are deep! If this music cant make you think, you're brain doesn't work.
Tunes from EP 1>>
"WATERBOMB" is a really sweet ambient indie rock tune, with a very sad feel overall. It is a bit like dark and haunting soundtrack music in one way, but a beautiful ballad in another. Next up is "SCRAPING THE PAINT" which is the most electronica of the 3 tracks from this cd, and again, is very dark and haunting but still keeps hold of that alt. rock sound that the group do a lot of. The third featured download from "EP 1" is the most conventional rocky track of the lot, featuring some funky basslines mixing it up with some really cool beats. It does the experimental IDIOVERSE thing in between, so 'tis not all that conventional really.

"The three tracks below as downloads, are all taken from the Independent net-release, "15 MINUTES", and, as mentioned before, it is an album centered around 15 tracks all of 1 minutes length, hence 15 MINUTES. We have decided to go with some of the full-length tracks from the album, to give you guys value for money, but if you like your electronica experimental, and sparse at times, this album is a must listen.
The first track we chose "SWEET SMOKE" is a cool raggae groove, with some wicked samples/fx thrown in. It went down very well with all that listened here, as did "OUTRAGE", a more in-ur-face tune built around breakbeats, scratches, rock guitars, and an almost hip hop vibe. The bass is really nice too. "PETIA & VOLKI" was our favourite track on the album. It shows D-JET off at his experimental best. It starts off with a nursery-rhyme-like melody, and then turns things slightly dark, before taking you on a magical trip. It really is something special."

"We have 3 tracks from the collaborative "1999-2003" album, by this talented colective who blend rock, blues, folk and jazz alongside some more ethnic sounds at times. Fronted by JASON HANELY these muso's have created many striking pieces, all with unique journeys, created by the differing talents that perform on each number."
"
The first track we chose is a massive one called "SEEMS SO EASY". This tune borrows much more from the collective's rock infleunces, and kicks off with some huge guitars and a beautifully rounded bassline. This should set the mood for you guys, as you will get a lot about their arrangments from the tune. It has a journey, but not in the radio-friendly way you would typically expect from a rock-ish tune. This as close to a jamming session as you will get, though it clearly has constant direction, its just that every part of the track is allowed to breathe and develop, alongside the track in its entirety. This track dates back to the mid-90's when songwriter JAY DURHAM spent extreme amounts of time exerimenting with psychadelics and subsidizing with herbal trade. the players on this one include JAY DURHAM, T.J. & TOM MCPHERSON.
"BROTHERS" is much more bluesey, and has some wicked instrumentation, as all SOUND PROOF tracks pride themselves on. The mixture of male and female vocals work a real treat, and the guitars do enough to catch the attention. The real raw sound that SOUND PROOF are known for is evident in this track, with the mouth organ and fretful guitar doing their bit to add to that particular atmosphere. The players on this one include VICTORIA PEARSON, JASON HANLEY & MARTY METS.
The 3rd and final tune from the album that we have featured is "MAN", a much more relaxed affair to the other two tunes. Again it is quite bluesey, but has a real ethnic touch to it too. You can feel the pain in this one for sure. It was wrote as a creative way of discussing 2 peoples perceptions of the 911 events in the US. The key players on this one are DANIEL MILLER, VICTORIA PEARSON, JASON HANLEY & MARTY METS."

Musical Comparisons: The only musical comparisons I've heard about me are quite shocking. They are The Residents, PJ Harvey and the Moldy Peaches. And one MC introduced me as the female Tom Waits. All very flattering, but I don't really see it. Most of my stuff just makes me uncomfortable to listen to. When I'm playing, however, I'm definitely in a different world and it feels more like a trance or an exorcism.
The Music: The best comments I've heard have been "It's not that you're a good musician, but I understand what you're doing," and after playing a hipster show where only two people clapped I told one of the clappers "There's really no place for me, is there?" He said "And that's good! You should keep that!" I might also mention, the two clappers were local artists I really admired, so it took the sting out of bombing in front of everyone. That night my last song was a spontaneous response to the show of "enthusiasm" called "When I look at you pants all I wanna do is jack off". I've made people cry before. If I wasn't playing I would have joined them. Usually, though, I'm pretty goofy. Right now I'm interested in marrying more live instruments with electronic noisy space movie soundtracks. We'll see what happens.
Wish List: A quick affordable cure for Rheumatism and Fibromyalgia, That only healthy cigarettes are available, A regular radio show, That someone invites me to tour North America, And that Bush is finally impeached.

"This ex-Olympian has finally hung up his oars and got around to finishing his debut long player. We have been able to choose 3 tracks from his "BOOTH AVENUE" album, and it was tough!!! The album is a 10 track journey of honesty and deep feeling, with quality production, writing, and instrumentation throughout."
"As we mentioned above we really found it difficult making 3 choices from this album. "BOOTH AVENUE" really is a great record from a great talent, but here are our choices. Firstly we choose "THANK YOU", a really cool downbeat number, that has a slightly errie feel to it. It's definitly one of the standout tunes on the album, and is one of NEAL's personal favoutites. Then we went with "IN ONE EAR", which is probably the most upbeat of the 3 we have featured. The guitar work on this one really stands out. The third and final choice is "MADE YOU SAD", another upbeat number. This one has a AIR-esque bassline that really drives it along.... One thing that stands out across all tracks on the album is the quality of the instrumentation and production. Big up STEVE ! .... and of course theres the top class lyrics, vocals and general songwriting skillz. All free downloads are currently exclusivly downloadable from QUEEP (ORGANIC) MUSIC."

Special Halloween Repost
Sounds to Make You Shiver - Pickwick Records
Up this week is an album that regularly scared the pants off the Pastor when he was a small fry. I'm not quite sure how my family came to own this LP. I am assuming my mother bought it to create some Halloween atmosphere at our house as she handed out candy. For a young Pastor of six however, the album became much more. The record fascinated and terrified me simultaneously. It became a personal test of my will to be able to sit through an entire playing of side one without running out of the room or turning it off. I used to scrutinize the cover for hours, wondering which of the many monsters depicted would invade my bedroom at night. Even listening to it now as an adult, the voice of the narrator still elicits an involuntary chill through my body. Listen if you dare and as always, Enjoy!!
NOTE: I shared this album last year around Halloween and it was such a popular download that I decided to host it again. The mp3s have been newly recorded using a LP that is in much better condition, so the mp3s have less surface noise, are louder, and better edited. Note that there is a discrepancy between the album cover listing and the number of tracks on side two. There is an extra track of just a screaming woman between ‘Count Dracula and his victim’ and ‘Screams and groans’. Happy Hauntings!
Side One 01. A Night In A Haunted House. Side Two 01. Witch Laugh. 02. Count Dracula and His Victim. 03. [Woman Screaming]. 04. Screams & Groans. 05. Moans & Groans. 06. Cats. 07. Dogs. 08. Terry Douglas composes extensively for electronic media, orchestra, chamber ensembles, solo instruments, and rockin' teen-age combos. His music investigates the fundamental elements of musical communication through new timbral, formal, and technological relationships. His recorded output is the culmination of a compressed yet wide-ranging exploration of the man and his work which began, simply enough, as a search for an understanding of Helmholtzian thermodynamics. It has since evolved instead into an analysis of the more arcane work in acoustical research and other forays into the psychophysics of human perception.
Although todays technology bestows pragmatic credence and relocates musical activity closer to the abstractions of science and mathematics, Douglas's attempts at a unique treatise on sound events (the sonic object) is a bold endeavor and a far more radical option to the commercial production of sound.
Sound, rhythm, and space. Ultra-chromatic chord frames. Deep and unreachable worlds explored with innovative experiments in form and structure. These are just some of the sonic avenues ventured down by the composer in his search for a new musical language. In an effort at realizing this new sonic architecture, Terry Douglas has been active in the world of sound installations and audio/visual production. He has performed and exhibited at numerous performance spaces, galleries, and festivals. Early in his career, he specialized as a percussionist, performing works by John Cage, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Edgar Varese. During this time he became fascinated with the concepts and experiments of Dr. Vladimir Gavreau. Since then his work has become increasingly focused in the realm of infrasound and it's practical and non-practical applications.
In other words: Terry Douglas is an Atlanta based multi-instrumentalist composer/producer working to bring avant-garde music to the masses.

Change! began in 1999, when frontman Aaron John began writing a new form of experimental pop music on the wood hammered dulcimer. Involved in many projects, AJ used this name to umbrella many of the incarnations of his song writing and quickly shifting band lineups. Somehow, the title stuck and over the past six years Change! has enjoyed live collaborations with nearly 30 artists while making it's home in Brooklyn, Austin and now Oakland!
The fundamental songwriting continues to be founded on the wood hammered dulcimer (built by Aaron's uncle), though special projects have also been written around the piano, theremin, and synthesizers. In the end, it is Aaron's witty lyricism and distinct voice which has brought all the the forementioned sounds together.
Circle Of Ambient Friends is a very heartfelt and private project which was primarliy penned during the summer and fall of 2003. These songs focus much less on the dulcimer and instead rely on plunderphonics, collage style song writing and darker lyrical themes (reminiscent of Aaron's high school roots of listening to the Pink Dots, New Order and Dead Can Dance.
It was with the assistance of Tim Blaze, that these songs were completed in the intended form (during the summer of 2005.) These recordings are a nice insight into many of the solo sets which dominated Change! performances during 2003-2004. Many thanks to Comfort Stand for encouraging us to finish and release these songs. And we promise, there will be many more to come!

"The second single from the critically acclaimed second album, "THE UNDERSTANDING". This Norweigen duo are on fire, with most of Europe warming to their creativly-original warm-sounding material. This tune, which features the vocals of CHELONIS R. JONES, is sure to do the damage once again."
"Their second album "THE UNDERSTANDING" was put out on July the 4th on WALL OF SOUND RECORDINGS, and shot in at number 13 in the UK Album Charts. At last count 80,000 copies had been grabbed and the buzz is still growing! This video we have featured is for the albums second single, "49%". This is the follow-up to the albums first single, "ONLY THE MOMENT", which was out on June the 27th. The reaction to ROYKSOPP's second album collectivly has been as promising as the first, and this new single sets about to re-affirm that notion. "49%" is a sublime emotive journey through uplifting breaky housey vibes, that has a huge commercial appeal, without getting cheesy in any way. The ultra-smooth vocals of CHELONIS R. JONES are perfectly suited to the euphoric, loved-up vibe that the track creates. This is one for the beach, and should be a massive crowd pleaser for the peeps who join the group on their forthcoming European tour (see dates below)."

Now, he's new to ivdt but he shouldn't be new to you at all, that is if you're up on your game; but still welcome him like you never knew him. For his ivdt debut, Zainetica drops some of the most crunchiest tear-soaked beauties that your ears will ever hear. I Fall Apart [mp3.054] is an 11 song masterpiece that balances the light & dark of emotion with perfection. Drenched in distortion like children in rain, the title track, I Fall Apart, sets the mood in tone & style. Melodies fallen from broken hearts atop concrete textured rhythms. Don't Do it grooves while Bill Hicks stomps thru. Sumire glistens like anime girl sunshine leading into the dark clouded Memento Mori. Like A Volcano slowly erupts. I Love You bounces with hugs. One Small Cloud floats on dreams and The Message appears with an angelic presence like she must of been traveling on that previous cloud. VS03 subs low just before closing with the reversed funk of False King. As a whole, I Fall Apart [mp3.054] is pure brilliance. You'll love it & welcome to ivdt Zainetica. Aloha, welcome back to Bellybongo LP sharity!
Some great latin-lounge sounds you will find on this one, I encoded only two long tracks, and I know both have weak moments, but as the LP is a live recording, I think I made the right choice. If you only listen while on work, perhaps I even made it easier for you.
More..? I have wanted this LP for several years, first copy I spotted went for too much money ($75 on eBay), second copy 1 year later was mine (9 dollars), it's a great album!
As usual the CD recorder did not work as I wanted it too, but as always, and if any faults... Blame technology. This is what you get, I will not do another recording.

"We have tracks featured below from the latest MANN FRIDAY album, "BLUE SKY SCIENCE", out now as an independent release. This album ups the tempo a little, with a much more rocky vibe, and continues with the same class as you would expect from this highly talented group."
GROUP MEMBERS:

guitar/backing vox:
Justin Cocks (South Africa)
bass/guitar/cello/violin:
Ryan Koriya (Zimbabwe)
drums:
Chris Gutch (Wales)
As mentioned the 3 featured downloads are all taken from the current MANN FRIDAY release, the "BLUE SKY SCIENCE" album. "SELFISH HEART" continues in the true traditions of MANN FRIDAY, with deep feeling entwined in fine musicianship. This is another one to sing along with, and the production level of this track matches the rest of the album. These guys are reaching their peaks, so watch out! "HEAL" is a much slower and thoughtful affair, with a certain beauty that lots of peeps will most definitly appreciate. It shows off their softer side, and as ever the songwriting and performances are top notch. "15 MINUTES OF SHAME" was recently released as a single, and is the signature track from the award-winning ZIMBABWE RUINS show. It really is a stand out track.... but then dont they have loads of these.... It hits on their more rocky side of proceedings, and is backed up with plenty of power and punch.
......extra stuff.......
We also have videos for "15 MINUTES OF SHAME", the groups last single release taken from the album in question, and "GOOD DAY", a great track with a really nice electronic flavour. And we had to leave the MP3 download for "COUNTING DOWN (sea pt. mix)" there too, because of the massive demand it still has. This is a HUGE!!!! tune, so make sure you do yourself a favour, and check it out.
